roof top applause

in the midst of a meeting in a nice little apartment on W 72nd Street, i heard a boom, a crack, and a few more pops.....

are those fireworks? being that it isn't even close to the 4th of July or New Years for that matter, i tried to figure out what all the celebration was about as i made my way to the 16th floor roof top.

and then it dawned on me as i opened the roof door to see the bright glittering smoke filled skies-this was for all those crazy, courageous, amazingly dedicated athletes that are running in the NYC Marathon tomorrow.

a brilliant display over the trees of central park about 3 blocks away from where i stood...the echos bounced off the city buildings and the glass reflections in the skyscrapers were almost as dazzling as the actual fireworks.

it seemed to last forever and it was great to just stand there in the cool evening and enjoy my second NYC firework display this year. a very good reason to interrupt the meeting that i was in!

as the last hurrah of blasts went into the air and the drifting haze made its way into the atmosphere...there was a new sound that i quickly joined in making...the various rooftops above and below, to the left and right were filled with fellow firework gazers applauding the magic of this yearly event.

a cities way of saying best of luck to all those runners and know that this is only the beginning of the applause that they will hear tomorrow as they make there way through the 5 boroughs.
